Gerry Pettit launched the men’s basketball program at Durham College in Oshawa, Ont., in 1969, the same year he was hired by an administrator by the expanding, two-year-old school. He coached several other black-and-green Lords teams during his tenure, but was best known for and had his greatest success as head coach of the golf program. In 23 years, his teams finished in the Top 10 in the province 20 times. Pettit’s teams claimed back-to-back gold medal championships in 1988 and ’89, as well as a silver and four bronzes in his nearly quarter-century as coach. Pettit retired from the college as director of admissions in 1993, but remained a regular figure in attendance at sporting events. He was named to the college’s sports hall of fame in 1997 and to the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Hall of Fame four years ago.
