Died: June 27, 2013 (Delta, B.C.)

George Koka became an umpire for 9- and 10-year-old boys in 1971, the beginning of several decades of work behind the plate as an arbiter and in the dugout as a coach. Over the years, he also handled girls softball and men’s softball and fast pitch. He was a mainstay at running the annual fastball tournament in Ladner, an historical neighbourhood in Delta, a suburb of Vancouver.

Koka also was a longtime volunteer for local charities, helping to provide Christmas food hampers for more than 40 years. He ran the meat draw at the local Legion hall and was given the annual honour of presenting a cheque to the televised Variety’s Show of Hearts Telethon.

“I just like helping people,” the dairy farmer told the Province newspaper last year.
