Marcus Karpati, who has died of cancer at 29, spent a decade as a player and an assistant coach with the Pronghorns at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta.
After graduation, he became an assistant coach for the team under longtime head coach Randy Bardock. Andrew Malcolm also chipped in as an assistant as Karpati dealt with his health.
During the 2014 season, the university’s soccer program dedicated Karp’s Korner, a playground at University Community Stadium.
Karpati was a teacher at Fleetwood Bawden elementary school and played soccer before becoming a teacher for two local teams, Lethbridge Croatia and Lethbridge FC Alberta.
He leaves Kathy (née Curtis), his wife of 16 months, a former member of the Pronghorns women’s team. He also leaves a sister, parents and grandparents.
