Smelt Gillis was a forward who spent seven seasons playing senior hockey in the Maritimes.

Smelt Gillis (tight crop)He began his senior career with his hometown Charlottetown (P.E.I.) Penguins. In 1959-60. He played 76 games over three seasons with 23 goals and 46 assists. In 1962-63, he was fourth in scoring in the P.E.I. Senior Hockey League with 23 goals and 24 assists in 24 games for the Charlottetown Parkdale Royals, as the team was known that season. He served a single minor penalty.

Gillis scored 27 goals with 27 assists in 65 games for the Moncton Hawks of the Nova Scotia Senior Hockey League in 1963-64.

He played a handful of games for the New Glasgow (N.S.) Rangers of the Maritime Senior Hockey League in 1964-65.

After being away from senior hockey for four seasons, he returned in 1969-70 to play for the Charlottetown Royals. At age 32, he scored seven goals with 11 assists in 24 games. He added three more goals and nine assists in 12 playoff games. One of his teammates on the Royals was Errol Thompson, 19, who made his debut with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL the following season.

Gillis died at Hillsborough Hospital in Charlottetown, aged 78.
