Cliff Matthews trained runners in Halifax, N.S., for a half-century. He was in Kenya training marathoner Denise Robson when he collapsed and died of a heart attack. He was 70.

The coach and the elite masters runner were at Iten, a town located 2,400 metres above sea level, known for a high-altitude training centre. Runners from around the world come to Iten to train with Kenyan runners.

Robson was in the East African nation to prepare for the upcoming Boston Marathon in April.

“The pain of losing my longtime coach, a man who cared deeply about people and held the highest regard for his athletes no matter the skill level was completely overwhelming and very frightening yesterday,” Robson wrote on her Facebook page.

Plans are being made for a run in honour of the popular coach, who trained has been training runners from Nova Scotia since the 1960s.

  1. Many thanks to Cliff for the laughs, coaching and advice. When I first started benefiting from Cliff’s support, I paid a very modest fee that he would reluctantly accept from his post Univ runners. 6 months later when he was digging out a bus card from his wallet, my chq was still there…un-cashed ! Incredibly selfless…all his energy offered for his runner’s. RIP. Well earned.
